Is Madeira good for scuba diving?
Yes — for temperate Atlantic diving. Madeira's appeal is volcanic geology (walls, lava formations, caves), the Garajau Marine Reserve (habituated dusky groupers), and the 2018 Corveta Afonso Cerqueira wreck. It's not a tropical reef destination — no coral, no clownfish — but visibility is 20-40m, water is 16-26°C year-round, and there are 12+ named sites for all skill levels.
What is the best time to dive in Madeira?
June through October is peak season — water 20-26°C, visibility 25-40m. May and November are excellent shoulder months: warm enough, less crowded, easier to book. December-March is divable (water 16-19°C, need 5-7mm wetsuit) but more weather-dependent. See our seasonality guide for month-by-month conditions.
How much does scuba diving cost in Madeira?
Discover Scuba (DSD) €45-90 all-in. Single fun dive (own gear) €30-50; with rental gear €55-80. Two-tank trip €79-135 depending on inclusions (always ask the all-in number). Open Water Course €399-500 + cert fees. AOW €299-500. Prices vary 10-15% by season; multi-dive packs save another 10-20%.
Do I need certification to dive in Madeira?
Yes for normal sport diving — minimum Open Water for most sites. No for Discover Scuba (DSD) which is a one-day taster led by an instructor 1-on-1 or 1-on-2. DSD goes to max 12m. For wrecks (Corveta, Bowbelle), you need AOW + 6+ recent dives + wreck specialty if penetrating.
Where is the Garajau Marine Reserve and why is it special?
Garajau is a Partial Nature Reserve on the south coast, accessed primarily from Caniço de Baixo (~15 min east of Funchal). Created in the 1980s to protect a section of seabed; the dusky groupers there have been habituated to divers for decades and stay close on dives. Can I dive the Corveta Afonso Cerqueira wreck?
Yes if you're AOW-certified with 6+ logged dives in the last 12 months — the standard operator policy. The wreck sits 12-33m on the south coast (Cabo Girão Marine Park area). It was sunk intentionally in 2018 as an artificial reef and modified for safe penetration with the proper certification. What wetsuit thickness do I need?
Summer (Jul-Sep) 22-26°C: 3/2mm full suit minimum, some prefer 5mm. Shoulder (Apr-Jun, Oct-Nov) 19-22°C: 5mm full suit standard. Winter (Dec-Mar) 16-19°C: 7mm semi-dry or 5/4mm with hood + gloves; some operators rent drysuits. Don't underestimate — Atlantic water feels colder than the surface temperature suggests after 30+ min bottom time.
Do I need the medical questionnaire signed in advance?
Yes. Every Madeira operator uses the DMSC/RSTC medical questionnaire — Discover Scuba included. Most travellers tick 'no' to everything and proceed normally. If you flag a condition (asthma, heart, ear surgery, recent surgery, pregnancy, certain medications), you need a physician's 'Approved' / 'Not approved' sign-off BEFORE you arrive. No conditional clearances — get it sorted 2-3 weeks before your trip.
Is Discover Scuba (DSD) worth it if I might never dive again?
Yes. €45-90 buys you a real sea dive at a real site (most likely Garajau Arena or Lazareto), with a 1-on-1 instructor, max 12m depth, ~30-40 min bottom time. It's the best test of whether you'll like diving without committing to the 3-4 day Open Water course. If you discover you love it, most operators credit your DSD toward a same-trip OW upgrade.
Can I dive Madeira without a guide / on my own?
No solo recreational diving in Madeira — buddy system is the standard, and operators won't let you onto a boat without an instructor or guide. Self-guided shore diving is technically possible if you bring all your own gear and certification, but it's strongly discouraged: nobody knows you're in the water, conditions can change, and you're outside any insurance coverage.
Should I dive Porto Santo?
Yes if you have time and want premium visibility. Porto Santo is Madeira's sister island (~2h ferry from Funchal). Visibility is regularly 40-60m on good days — exceptional for a temperate destination. The Madeirense and Cordeca wrecks are the headline dives. Plan 2-3 days for it; don't try to day-trip.
I'm on a cruise — can I dive Madeira on a port day?
Possible but tight. Most cruise ships dock 6-10 hours in Funchal. A 2-tank dive trip is typically 4-5 hours total (briefing, transfer, two dives, surface intervals). Several centres offer 'cruise-friendly' packages. Don't try to dive Porto Santo or do the Corveta wreck on a single port day — the buffer is too thin. Check the no-fly rule (12+ hours after diving) against your cruise schedule.
What marine life will I see?
Year-round commons: dusky groupers (habituated at Garajau), morays (multiple species), barracuda schools, parrotfish, wrasses, octopus, anemones, urchins. Seasonal/occasional: rays (eagle, butterfly, stingray), tuna, monk seals (rare — 2-3 sightings/year reserve-wide), manta rays (very rare). Wrecks add: nudibranchs, scorpionfish, occasional dorado around the Corveta. Madeira is geology + macro life, not coral.
Is it safe to fly home the same day after diving?
No. The post-dive flying rule is minimum 12 hours after a single non-decompression dive, 18 hours after multi-day diving, 24 hours to be safe. Plan your last dive day with this buffer in mind — if you're flying home Saturday morning, your last dive should end Friday evening at the latest, and ideally Friday morning. Operators will tell you this; respect it.
